Eteng Jones Williams, the member representing Yakurr II State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly says he “cannot assess his performance in the assembly but will rather leave his constituents to do that” but will instead concentrate on discharging his legislative functions to the best of his ability.
Williams, who is also the Chairman, House Committee on Security, while speaking with calitown.com yesterday, explained further that it is in the hands of the people who voted him in to say if his contributions in and out of the House have touched the lives of his people. “I have ensured within reasonable limits that I meet the needs of my people” and “where necessary, what should accrue to my people has not passed them by”.
On the recent communal clash between the Inyima Community in Yakurr and their Onyeadama counterparts in Obubra, the legislator said that it was regrettable that people who had all these years lived together will take up arms and unleash the kind of mayhem that was unleashed “over a piece of land”. “It was uncalled for and it is something we should not encourage because for us in CRS it is against the fundamental principles that we preach”.
Speaking on the seemingly contentious issue of the Yakurr Leboku Festival, Williams said, “people have insisted that the festival be called Ugep and not Yakurr Festival, but I think this is a divisive position because we are all one. Those who complain about the Mr & Miss Leboku aspect of the festival and the fact that winners have all but emerged from Ugep tend to forget that the first Best Harvester award and a pick-up truck, went to an Mkpani man”. He also pointed out that “even in the last festival, Mkpani community won the N2 million prize as the best participating community. These things should be relegated to the background, what we need is to move our LGA forward instead of take it backwards”, he concluded.
