Court Halts Celebration Of Igbo Community Cultural Day In Calabar

Posted on December 10, 2022 By Admin No Comments on Court Halts Celebration Of Igbo Community Cultural Day In Calabar

A Cross River State High Court sitting in Calabar and presided over by Justice Elais O. Abua, has restrained the Igbo community in the state from organising and holding her Cultural Day in Calabar.

In an ex-parte motion brought before the court, in Suit No. HC/MSC. 207/2022, by Agu Onyekachi, Raymond Atulomah and David Ihesiulo against Sam Ebo, Esq, Bassey Ukiwo, Pol Nwokolo, Jeremiah Ezeagu and Ebere Okonkwo, the presiding judge, restrained the defendants from holding any event, by whatsoever name or umbrella called, in Calabar.

The suit before the court arose from the leadership disagreement rocking the Igbo community in Cross River State. That disagreement began after the leadership election held between June 16 and 30, 2022. One faction led by Kingsley Kalu and the other faction led by Raymond Atulomah both lay claim to having won the election and became enmeshed in a tussle for authenticity

Atulomah in a bid to establish his authenticity, approached the court asking that he be recognized as the authentic Igbo Community leader in Calabar having contested and won the said election.

He prayed too that the court should restrain the Kalu faction from holding the event.

Kalu differed, even going ahead to propose the Igbo Cultural Day celebration for Saturday, December 10, 2022 and proposing a venue at the Management Development Institute, Calabar, while this matter was in court.

After legal arguments by legal representatives on both sides, Abua granted “an order ex parte to last for 14 days only…”
