Yakurr Local Government has emerged first place winner of the 2024 Cross River State Cultural Carnival, beating 17 local government areas to the top prize.

In the cultural festival held on Thursday, December 26, 2024, Yakurr pushed Calabar South and Odukpani LGAs to second and third positions, respectively, showcasing a remarkable appearance and performance marked by a dynamic shift from previous years. Yakurr LGA’s performance, infused creativity, nativity, originality and highlighted the consummate cultural contexts of the people of Yakurr. Her frontline girls, drawn from the nine communities that make up the LGA, the Ekoi maidens, the King and Queen Consort and her chiefs plus her gaily dressed warrior clans, awed spectators into a tumultuous applause for the contingent.

Yakurr’s contingent, led by council chairman, Yibala Inyang, accompanied by a rich retinue of executive council members, sons and daughters of the LGA, showcased an ebullient, rich cultural heritage that effectively interpreted this year’s carnival theme, “Our Shared Prosperity.”

This victory reflects and validates the importance of promoting and preserving culture and traditions, setting Yakurr’s presentation apart from the other local government area contingents that competed.

Inyang, council chairman, told www.calitown.com that this victory, “clearly outlines my administration’s commitment to excellence. Yakurr has a rich cultural heritage and when prompted to showcase what is naturally ours, we were deliberate about not letting our guards down. I am happy with the team that put all of this today and there is more to come in the future, I promise. We are grateful to our state governor for sustaining the carnival tradition, it is a vision I excitedly commend.”
