The University of Cross River State, UNICROSS, says it is working to attract the best of human and material resources to the institution. Additionally, it has commenced collaborative engagement with the Nigerian Air Force, NAF, beginning with the hosting of a one-day workshop in the institution.

Declaring the workshop open in UNICROSS, this past Monday, December 15, 2025, with the theme, “Introductory Perspectives on Aviation and Security”, Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS, Francisca Bassey, a Professor of Chemistry, described the workshop as an initial step in a broader engagement between the university and the military.

She noted that the initiative would help staff and students better appreciate the professionalism and intellectual depth of uniformed personnel, while exposing them to learning and career opportunities in aviation and security.

She said: “It is a very rare privilege to have this calibre of people come from the military to spend their time and see how our children can be brought up. There is so much learning and training to acquire. I want to encourage my colleagues and my children the students, to open their minds and their hearts to this special workshop. Listen and know the areas you are interested in. Take advantage of today.”

She reaffirmed UNICROSS’ commitment to strategic partnerships, citing the university’s recent collaboration with Zhenjiang College, China, and emphasized ongoing efforts to attract high-quality academic and professional collaborations.

Director of Academic Planning, Hannah Etta, present at the workshop, stated that community service is a core mandate of academic institutions, adding that the collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force aligns with this responsibility.

Frederick Oyenusi, a Group Captain and Commander of the 305 Special Mobility Group, Nigerian Air Force, who delivered the workshop lecture, highlighted the relevance of all academic disciplines to the aviation industry and encouraged staff and students to engage in research that addresses practical challenges. He traced the history of aircraft development and emphasized Nigeria’s resource potential, particularly in Cross River State, urging participants to develop proposals that could support aircraft development initiatives.

The session included an interactive question-and-answer segment, during which Nigerian Air Force personnel outlined career opportunities available to interested students.

The event was attended by the Vice Chancellor, Academic, Stella Maris-Okey, Vice Chancellor, Administration, Thomas Ojikpong; the Acting Registrar, Uno I. Ogban; members of the University Senate; and numerous staff and students.
