The Cross River State Ministry of Social Welfare and Community Development, has embarked on the evacuation and repatriation of street children following the directive of state governor, Benedict Ayade, Director of Social Welfare, Isaac Ebuara has disclosed.

Ebuara said the evacuation and repatriation exercise which started in June this year has so far evacuated 67 street children who are now in a transit home at the Destiny Child Centre, DCC, and are being counseled and rehabilitated pending their reunification with their families and re-integration into the society.

He added that 90% of the children are from the neighbouring Akwa Ibom State, who choose to be on the street for no just course, but whose parents are willing to receive them back to their homes and give them quality education, hinting further that, the effect of the anti-social behaviour acquired by the by the children on the streets has created a negative impact on the society, something the Ministry is working at and to also help inculcate moral values that should accommodate and encourage them to enhance their education or engage in vocational skills.

Finally, the Director advised the children to remain with their parents and go back to school pointing out that education is the basic foundation for their future development.
