Rains Trigger Landslide In Calabar

For most residents of the lower section of Etim Ekpo Crescent, opposite the Women Development Centre on Parliamentary Road, Calabar, the early Thursday morning rain in Calabar was no blessing as the rain triggered a life threatening landslide which ate up a substantial amount of the road, consumed property while no life was lost, www.calitown.com can reveal.

Residents in the area say Thursday’s landslide was a disaster waiting to happen as a deep gully caused by erosion had gradually eaten into the Crescent before Thursday’s rain confirmed the fears of those living close to the erosion site.

A visibly worried woman whose partially completed house looks certain to be consumed if another heavy downpour occurs, pointed www.calitown.com to a property directly opposite her’s, completely destroyed by the erosion. She said that while residents in the area have made representations to government, those with the capacity to halt the erosion have not responded.

Sources within the Cross River State Ministry of Works who did not want to be quoted said that most of those who bought pieces of land and developed property close to the erosion site did so against the advice of the Ministry. Our investigations show that, the channeling of water to the end of the Etim Ekpo Crescent, during the tarring of the Crescent, may have energized the erosion which now looks certain to eat in more. It was also discovered that most residents of the area are leaving the place, as no respite appears to be in sight.
