What could have been the latest in a series of communal clashes that have recently plagued Cross River State was averted this past Sunday as the police in Ikom, arrested one Vic Oru, the principal suspect in the murder of Ekor Ebonom, a 46 year old mother of three, who was brutally murdered in her farm in Nde, Ikom Local Government Area, CRS.

Sources in the area informed www.calitown.com that the suspect who resides in the neighbouring Akparabong community, had repeatedly harvested cassava from the victim’s farm without her knowledge. Irked by this unfortunate situation, the victim is said to have gone to the farm on the fateful Sunday, hoping to apprehend whoever was stealing her cassava.

It was further gathered that, minutes after the victim arrived and hid in the farm, the suspect arrived too and started harvesting the cassava, prompting her to come out of hiding and accost him. In the ensuing confrontation, the suspect wrestled her to the ground, overpowered and inflicted match cuts to her head and body, even cutting of her hands by the wrist. He thereafter abandoned the victim and headed home.

By late evening when the victim was unaccounted for in Nde village, a search party set out and only found her gory corpse lying at the scene of the deadly confrontation. It drew the ire of the people who immediately mobilized for an attack on the Akparabong community, after news filtered into the Nde community that the suspect’s wife had informed a few persons that her husband came home with an unusual amount of blood stains on his farm clothes.

Police sources at the Area Command Office, Okuni, Ikom, confirmed to www.calitown.com that they acted on this information and arrested the suspect, averting a communal clash between the Nde and Akparabong communities. The suspect was awaiting transfer to Calabar at the time of filing this report.
