Family sources in Ugep, Yakurr LGA, Cross River State, have confirmed the unfortunate death of a young man, Michael Obeten, after he was struck by debris from a canon blasted during the dramatisation of the passion of Christ, this past Good Friday.
We gathered that Obeten, an ardent Catholic of the Holy Cross Catholic parish, Ugep, always acted the part of Jesus Christ, during the church’s depiction of the last hours before the crucifixion. Added to that was a part where sound mimicking the thunder alluded to in the Bible (John 12:28), before the death of Jesus, had to be recreated. It was in the course of that dramatic recreation that a piece flying off the explosive canon, hit the victim on the head, knocking him unconscious.
While we can also confirm that he was immediately taken to the General Hospital in Ugep, he was referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, for specialist medical care.
Early this morning, a family source confirmed to www.calitown.com that the victim, a Mass Communication graduate from the University of Cross River State, had passed on, leaving behind a father, confined to a wheelchair, that he was almost single handedly nursing and taking care of.
