Sources inside the Catholic Archdiocese of Calabar have confirmed to www.calitown.com, the passing on of Joseph Edra Ukpo, Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Calabar, Cross River State, after a brief illness.

Born on June, 1937, in Okpoma, Yala LGA of CRS, the deceased was ordained a Catholic priest on April 25, 1965 and appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ogoja on April 24, 1971. Three years later on March 1, 1973, he became Bishop of Ogoja.

On December 17, 2003, Ukpo was drafted from Ogoja Diocese to the Archdiocese of Calabar and appointed Archbishop of Calabar, Nigeria, retiring on February 2, 2013. His funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the Church.
