Security operatives in the University of Calabar have arrested one Kinghope Ubi, suspected to have threatened some students of institution with a toy gun and snatching their phones.

Ubi was arrested at the institution’s ICT Centre in the company of two friends, suspected to be accomplices in using the gun to subdue one Akomaye Ephraim and collecting in the process, the victim’s Tecno Camon 16 Premium phone valued at N108,000.

When interrogated, the suspect confessed that he came into the university to visit his girl friend and thereafter, he decided to snatch some phones from students.

Ubi, who is not a student of UNICAL, said that his friend gave him the toy gun for the operation. Found on him was a passport of him in the uniform of the Nigeria Customs Service uniform. He claimed to newsmen that he was dismissed from the Customs Service in 2021.

Speaking on the arrest, the Acting Chief Security Officer of UNICAL, Usani Okon, a retired Superintendent of Police, said that the administration of Florence Banku Obi, Vice Chancellor, frowns at any act of stealing and robbery on campus. He said that the VC has repositioned the security operatives in the institution with a view to protecting all students and staff against all forms of robbery and attack.

The suspect is currently in the custody of the Anti-Kindapping and Cultism Squad of the Police for further investigations.
