‘Arrest’ Of Suspect Averts Ugep/Ekori Communal Clash

Posted on September 19, 2013September 19, 2013 By Admin 4 Comments on ‘Arrest’ Of Suspect Averts Ugep/Ekori Communal Clash

What would have resulted in a communal clash between the Ugep and Ekori communities of Yakurr Local Government Area, Cross River State, was averted yesterday when mobilized youth groups in Ekori, combed the area and its environs and in the process effected the arrest of a young man suspected to have been the arrow head in the killing of one George Stephen Bassey, abducted on Monday, 16th of September from Ugep and taken to Ekori where he was robbed of his motorcycle and left dead in an uncompleted building.

The killing of Bassey, calitown.com sources say, heightened tension in the area as youths from the Ugep community had started clandestine preparations to seek out the suspected killers. Acting on the information, men of thought in Ekori approached the Ugep monarch, Obol Ubi Ujong Inah, promising to fish out the suspects and also suing for restraint.

Going back to Ekori, the men organized the search parties that fortunately threw up the suspect, a relation of Bassey, from Ugep. Sources informed further that but for the quick intervention of security operatives in the area, the suspect would have been lynched by angry youths in both communities.

At the time of going to press, calitown.com sources say the suspect has been moved to the State Police Command headquarters in Calabar.

So a relation of Bassey himself spearheaded the killing of his kin? Whatever for? He should have been left at the mercy of the youth. These are the type who cause bad blood among the Yakurr.

We thank God and many thanks to Obol Ubi Ujong Inah. we do not need conflict, it is important that our people exercise caution and restraint in times like this.
