A man in his mis thirties, alleged to have been responsible for the theft of seven motorcycles in 14 days, has been nabbed in Okpoma, Yala LGA, North of Cross River State.
Identified simply to www.calitown.com as Kelvin, sources in the area revealed that the suspect simply targets motorcycles parked at vigil and burial ceremonies. “While people are engaged/distracted by one burial activity or the other, he stealthily disconnects the ignition of the targeted motorcycle and takes off”, a source who has elected to remain anonymous, told us.
The stolen motorcycles are normally taken to neighbouring villages and sold at giveaway prices. The suspect is said to have confessed to stealing only seven motorcycles, even though sources in the area maintain that more than 10 motorcycles remain unaccounted for in the last 14 days.
“See, he is not even from our community but he knows our burial days and on a particular day there could be up to five burials so he moves from one burial venue to another during wake -keeps to steal motorcycles”
A rather outrageous twist to the suspect’s mode of operation is the punishment he has been been handing down to men who own motorcycles and have been sleeping with his girlfriend. “Each time he goes to the woman’s place and meets any of the men who parks a motorcycle and consorts with his girlfriend, he punishes the men by allegedly stealing their motorcycles”, we were also informed.
“He said he felt cheated by the men sleeping with his girlfriend and decided to steal their motorcycles so that the man would be unable to visit and sleep with her again”.
The suspect has since been handed over to the police at the Divisional Police Station, Okpoma, Yala LGA.
