Akin Ricketts

Last weekend, Akin Ricketts, businessman and former Commissioner for Information, Cross River State, hosted a string of ceremonies marking the remembrance anniversary/thanksgiving in honour of his late grand father, N.U.OFEM, a highly celebrated chief, Officer of the Order of Niger, OON and Member of the British Empire, MBE, who was born in 1890 and died in 1981.

Eminent dignitaries from far and wide graced the very colourful occasion which took place in Ugep, Cross River State.

The late Ofem built a successful career in politics, alongside contemporaries like the great Nnamdi Azikiwe, as well as Michael Okpara, first and last premier of Nigeria’s Eastern region and a lot too numerous to mention. He was delegate to the 1958-1959 London Constitutional Conference that negotiated the independence of Nigeria in 1960 and Chairman of the Eastern Council of Chiefs.
