Candidate of the Labour Party in next year’s polls for the Abi/Yakurr House of Representatives position, Cross River State, John Ifere, has reached out to thousands of Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, currently camped at the St. Theresa’s Primary School, Ugep, Yakurr LGA, CR Central, handing them, drinking water, food items, medical supplies and other materials worth millions of naira.

While making the donation at the camp, Ifere said the intractable Nko/Onyeadama communal conflict must become a deliberate cause of concern for every man and woman of goodwill because the displacement and suffering presently experienced by most indigenes of the two communities should ideally not be the case. Specifically, he charged members of both communities to make sincere efforts at embracing lasting peace so that they can all return to their normal way of living.

Addressing the large crowd who later gathered to access medical assistance provided by him, Ifere informed them that he thought it important to bring a team of doctors and allied medical personnel to assess the health of the IDPs and offer them drugs on a continuous basis. “My team and I reasoned that because of the circumstances surrounding your arrival here and conditions of this camp, you will need medical assistance, that I have provided. We also are giving the women a huge consignment of sanitary pads and more will come in the days ahead as my little commitment to help ameliorate the inconveniences you presently face”, he said.

Ifere who later spoke with www.calitown.com, maintained that, “what I have done here and will continue to do is my little way of letting my people in need lean on my shoulders. What you see here, can befall anybody and so those of us who are lucky not to be in this unfortunate circumstances should pitch in and lend a helping hand, it is the little we can do to especially, the glory of God.”

Several IDPs spoken to, expressed gratitude to Ifere for the donations and prayed that God will bless the works of his hands.
