Omu

Retired Major General of the Nigerian Army and former Military Governor of the then South-Eastern State—later renamed Cross River State, Paul Ufuoma Omu, will be laid to rest on Saturday, November 29, 2025, in Igbide, Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, burial documents sighted by www.calitown.com indicate.

The former military administrator of South Eastern State, died at 85. Born on July 1, 1940, Omu joined the Nigerian Army on December 10, 1962, training alongside Ibrahim Babangida, Sani Bello, and Garba Duba at the Nigerian Military Training College, before attending the Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, United Kingdom. He was commissioned on July 25, 1963.
As Commander of the 33 Infantry Brigade, he was appointed Military Governor of South-Eastern State. He earned a reputation for integrity, discipline, and fairness—traits that characterized his public life.
In 1984, during the Buhari administration, he served as Chairman of the Lagos Zone Military Tribunal, which tried public officials from the Shehu Shagari era over corruption allegations. Most were convicted and sentenced.
He later, in 1985, became Commandant of the Command and Staff College, Jaji. When Babangida launched the transition to civilian rule, Omu chaired a nine-member panel to review the Political Bureau’s recommendations and draft the transition White Paper. He retired as a Major General on September 3, 1990, in the military purge that followed the Orkar/Mukoro coup attempt.

He passed away on April 29, 2025.
