The Cross River State governor, Liyel Imoke, has advised corps members deployed to the state to see the service year as a period to prepare and take up leadership roles in future. The Governor who was speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the 2014 Batch ’B’ corps members at the Permanent Orientation Camp, Obubra, said the service year requires submission to leadership authority and affirmation of their readiness to achieve the lofty aims and objectives of the scheme.

Speaking through the Secretary to the State Government, Mike Aniah, Imoke implored collaborating agencies in the camp to ensure that team spirit is in place to prepare corps members for the task of nation building.

He congratulated the corps members for their brilliant academic performances that has earned them a place in the National Service and charged them to be law abiding in the camp and during the entire service year.

Presenting his address, the Commissioner for Youth & Sports Development, and Chairman NYSC Governing Board, Patrick Ugbe, called on corps members to use their service year to properly integrate into the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme. Ugbe said, the state under the leadership of Gov. Imoke has provided the enabling environment to achieve the objectives of the scheme at the grassroot level and admonished them to see their posting to the State as an act of God, while assuring them that the state remains peaceful, homely to corps members and all who desire to make the state their abode.

NYSC State Coordinator, Nkereke Ibangha disclosed at the occasion that a total of 2,354 corps members have been registered so far and that the three-week orientation course is structured to prepare them physically and mentally for post orientation life in their various places of primary assignments. He further said that the drive to teaching and empowerment of corps members for life after the service year has gained momentum and impetus with the zeal of the new Director General of the scheme, Olawumi Johnson. Ibangha assured that management is fully committed to the welfare of everybody in camp and will spare no expense in making sure the orientation course is a memorable and life changing experience. Hon. Justice Adie Oyebueke administered the Oath of Allegiance on the corps members on behalf of the State Chief Judge, Justice Okoi Ikpi Itam.
