Cross River Health Commissioner, Angela Oyo-Ita says government will not pursue the establishment of a medical school in the Cross River University of Technology, CRUTECH, because the state has not exhausted her quota in the University of Calabar medical school. Additionally she insists that there is still a lot of work to be done, building and equipping CRUTECH’s Basic Medical School in Ogoja, North of CRS and if funds are channeled into properly developing the Basic Medical School, it will benefit the state.

Oyo-Ita who spoke exclusively with www.calitown.com again said, “it is not the number of medical schools that you have but the quality. So we are not pushing to have another medical school”. Perhaps realizing the enormity of the project, she disclosed that, “…for you to have another medical school, the resources must be on ground; human resources the trainers and the infrastructure to train”.

On the training of doctors in the employ of the state, the commissioner revealed that, “right now our doctors are being trained on emergency lifesaving skills which has to do with maternal care to help them respond to emergencies associated with maternal and child health. We had done a similar one for community health extension workers and for midwives…training programmes are now based on the needs we see in the system”, she concluded.
