Large parts of Calabar, the Cross River State capital are presently at a standstill as the metropolis stages the 2015 Calabar Carnival, www.calitown.com can authoritatively report.

The major carnival route; Calabar Road through Mary Slessor Road unto Marian Road, MCC, and the Murtala Muhammed highway have been closed to vehicular movement by heavily armed security men who are keeping an eagle eye on the carnival. Most people commuting to Calabar are having to alight from vehicles and trek long distances or take alternative routes that do not originate or terminate on any of the carnival routes.

Meanwhile, a large number of spectators have lined both sides of the route. Our reporter on the Mary Slessor leg of the route just called in to say that, “it is indeed a sight to behold as most families have canopies set up and are having both heavy and light refreshments while patiently waiting for the carnival parade”.

Asked to comment on the turn out and his general impression of the Carnival, he says “it is really very colourful and the turnout of participants is astonishing. It is actually a celebration of very beautiful colours and even though the weather is quite humid out here, not many people, participants and spectators show any sign of fatigue”.
