The Cross River State Government has promised her Ministry’s support to the Research Triangle Institute International (RTI/Envision) as the non-governmental organization works at helping to eradicate Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in the state.

CRS Health Commissioner, Inyang Asibong made this promise on behalf of government when RTI undertook an advocacy visit to her office. She further expressed hope that the State Government would meet the terms and conditions of an expected Memorandum of Understanding due to be signed between the state government and RTI from 14th – 20th, February 2016, to strengthen, regularise and legalise the intended relationship.

Asibong thanked the organization for the visit; adding that at the end of the envisaged programme of activities which would span five years, the CRS would have achieved a lot in terms of elimination of NTDs river blindness (onchocerciasis), trachoma (granular conjunctivitis), lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis (bilharzia) and trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) among others.

Earlier the Resident Programme Advisor of Research Triangle Institute International, Benjamin Nwobi informed that his organization was in the State to seek collaboration in the elimination of prevalent neglected tropical diseases and called on the Ministry to drive the MOU signing process which will among other activities, guarantee the restructuring of the NTDs Unit through equipping it and building human capacity to ensure improved public health programmes quality in the state.
