Unical Sacks Bursar, Conflict Shifts To Court

Authorities of the University of Calabar, Unical, have terminated the appointment of Peter Agi, the embattled Bursar of the institution, seemingly putting to rest speculations about Agi’s fate in a bitter and protracted conflict that pitched him against the Vice-Chancellor of Unical, Zana Akpagu and invisible individuals within and outside the institution.

The termination of Agi’s appointment was contained in a letter, dated November 3, 2016, signed by Moses O. Abang, Registrar of the university, wherein it was stated that the decision to terminate Agi’s appointment was reached at the 146th meeting of the University Council, held on Thursday, November 3, 2016. Among other issues, the letter specified that Agi refused to pay duly authorized and approved allowances to staff, unilaterally granted press interviews on matters relating to Unical without clearance and even refused to appear before an investigative panel set up by the University to look into the conflict. The letter ended by directing Agi to handover all the University of Calabar property in his care, including his identity card while wishing him well in his future endeavours.

However, Agi’s legal representative, Joe Oloko, a lawyer, informed www.calitown.com that his client’s appointment was purportedly terminated in defiance of the courts as he had written and informed the University that Agi cannot appear before the panel set up in the institution because the matter in question had already been filed before the National Industrial Court since August this year. He maintained that they will argue in court that Unical be charged with contempt. Further investigations revealed that Unical’s legal representatives have also made full representations on the matter in court. The hearing of substantive applications on the matter has been fixed for November 17, 2016.
