CR: Police Authorities Detain Two Patrol Teams, Raid Ugep

CP Hafiz Inuwa

Two police patrol teams in Calabar, believed to have been more concerned with extorting money from motorists instead of conducting thorough security searches, have been arrested and detained on the orders of the Cross River State Commissioner of Police, Hafiz Inuwa. The arrest we hear was effected after complaints by motorists against the patrol teams, reached police authorities, prompting the setting up of a special squad that accosted the erring patrol teams, at an illegal road block, close to the pedestrian bridge on Marian road, www.calitown.com can reveal.

While more details of the arrest and detention were held back, a top police source hinted that the CP has expressly queried the two Divisional Police Officers, DPOs, under whose offices the detained policemen operate. Their identities were also not released but assurances were given that their arrest and detention will deter several others from extortions that normally create vehicular gridlocks.

Meanwhile, several persons suspected to have played one role or the other in the suspected cult related killing of a young man in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government, have been arrested and detained by the police. Informants on the ground and police sources say the victim was killed in a brawl and secretly buried in a shallow grave. While the secret burial of the deceased was meant to conceal the act, heavy downpour just hours after the act, washed the corpse ashore, triggering a chain of arrests by the police as authorities work at getting the culprits. At press time, www.calitown.com confirmed that most young men in the area have left the area afraid that they may be arrested. It was impossible to speak with the local monarch at press time.
