Ebri Ubi, a Cross River State born Inspector of Police, has been sentenced to death by a Delta State High Court sitting in Asaba after he was found culpable for shooting to death, one Onyeka Ibeh, a popular phone dealer, on April 5, 2023, sparking wild protests in Asaba.

The court presided over by Hon. Justice C. D. Diai, gave the verdict this past Tuesday.

Ubi is said to have flagged down Ibeh for a routine police check, while the deceased was driving from Ugbolu to Asaba. The deceased it was established, cleared his vehicle, in the company of his wife and waited for the check, which did not happen. Tired of endlessly waiting, even ignored by the team that flagged him down, he decided to continue his journey and ended up being fatally shot in the head by the convict who released a barrage of rounds, killing Ibeh on the spot. His wife was unhurt.

At the trial, the prosecution, led by a Director in the Ministry of Justice, E.H. Edema, accused the policeman of intentionally killing Ibeh .

Edema told journalist after the court verdict that the “… judgement is a landmark judgement because justice has been served in this case to the deceased and society at large.”
