Special Assistant to the Nigerian President on Prosecutions, Okoi Ofem Obono-Obla, has revealed that while commuters plying the Calabar-Ikom-Ogoja road continue to endure torrid times on the road, the Federal Government, paid a construction company, Sermatech Nigeria Limited, a princely sum of N1, 725, 862, 473, 50 (One billion, seven hundred and twenty five million, eight and sixty two thousand, four hundred and seventy three naira, fifty kobo), for the rehabilitation of the Alesi-Ugep section of the Cal/Ikom highway.

The revalation which was conveyed via his Facebook wall, further indicates that the payment was done on the 2nd of February, 2015 as contained in an “Engineers Certificate” signed by one C. O. Uzo, Director of Highways, South-South Department, Zonal Headquarters, Federal Ministry of Works, Benin, Edo State.

For the job addressed as contract No. 6263, N9, 168, 931, 117. 50, was set aside for the it and N1.3bn was advanced in December 2014. Investigations by www.calitown.com reveal that work on that stretch of the road has been done in patches without work substantially done. Commuters on the road spoken to insist that work done on the stetch of road is inadequate. One commuter who does not want his name mentioned in print submitted that, “what we are passing through on this road is terrible and if they have spent this kind of money and nothing has happened on this road, it is unfortunate”.
