
Offiong Offiong, renowned professor of Coordination/Inorganic Chemistry, has emerged as the 12th Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Unical.
The announcement which was made by the Governing Council of the university led by Ekpo Udom, will see Offiong, effectively take over from Florence Obi, Unical’s first female Vice Chancellor, whose tenure ends on Dec. 1, 2025.
Offiong, a former Cross River State Commissioner for Education, was born in Calabar on November 6, 1963. He attended Hope Waddell Training Institution, Calabar, passed WASC with Division One in 1979. He holds a B.Sc. (Hons), second class upper degree in Chemistry, obtained in 1984 from University of Calabar. In 1990 he obtained his Ph.D. in Coordination/Inorganic Chemistry from the same university.
He began his lecturing career in 1985 as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Chemistry, University of Calabar, rising to the rank of Professor in Coordination/Inorganic Chemistry in 2002.
An astute Academic/Researcher with more than 90 Research articles/publications in high impact journals, Offiong is also a highly sought after postgraduate/undergraduate External Examiner in many universities across Nigeria.
So far, he has successfully supervised seven Masters and 16 Ph.D. theses in the University. One of the Ph.D. theses won a National Universities Commission’s Award of Best Thesis in Physical Sciences in Nigerian Universities in 2012.
