tmp_2014_07_18_11_25_42_189-935973046On the very busy Calabar/Ikom Highway, tragedy struck last Friday, near the Ugep Divisional Office of the Cross River State Fire Service as a lorry, commuting to Calabar, ran into a motorbike, killing the rider on the spot and leaving the female occupant of the bike in bad shape. The accident which occurred in the morning of the fateful day, attracted a large crowd of wailing sympathisers who trooped to the scene to catch a glimpse of the rider’s mangled corpse.

Sources on the ground informed www.calitown.com that the accident was caused by another truck commuting from the opposite direction, trying to avoid a bad portion of the road. It was further learnt that it was in an attempt to avoid the portion that the truck veered off its lane while in her bid to avoid a head on collision with the other truck, unfortunately ran into the motorbike. Other accounts point to the fact that the driver of the truck was speeding and may have encountered difficulties controlling his speed. While the driver of the truck is said to be at large, the corpse of the rider, believed to be from Ebijakara, a village in neighbouring Abi Local government Area of the state, may have been buried. The female occupant was rushed to a hospital in Ugep where she later passed on.
