As the fallout from the recent confrontation between herdsmen and the Ugaga Community in Yala Local Government Area, North of Cross River State continues, sources in the area have informed www.calitown.com that the community’s Clan head as well as the Youth leader were today arrested and ferried to Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Police officers we gathered stormed the village early in the morning and took away Chief Ogamode Ipoule and another man simply identified to us as Odaji, the youth leader.
This arrest follows their recent arrest and detention at the State Police Command, Diamond Hill, Calabar, on the strength of several petitions written by persons believed to be members of the Hausa community in Yala.
The community accuses the herdsmen of destroying their crops, properties and in a few instances, loss of life. This accusation snowballed into the recent attack of some herdsmen by suspected community members. Government appears to have taken inadequate steps so far to tackle this ugly situation as there is palpable tension in the area after today’s arrest.
