The UNICROSS Media Team has taken note of the open appeal addressed to His Excellency, the Governor of Cross River State, Bassey Edet Otu, by a group that has been named as “Concerned Students of Cross River State University (UNICROSS)”.
We acknowledge the concerns expressed and wish to respond as follows, on behalf of the University’s Management:
1. The recent adjustment in school fees was undertaken in the overall interest of the University and its students, with the objective of strengthening academic standards, improving infrastructure, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the institution. The review was implemented without discrimination and was not targeted at any individual or group.
2. The fee adjustment reflects prevailing economic realities and rising operational costs faced by public universities nationwide. It was neither arbitrary nor the decision of a single individual. The process followed established institutional procedures and involved extensive deliberations by relevant statutory bodies, including the Governing Council (through its Labour Relations Committee), the Students Union Government (SUG) and the University Senate. The final approval was granted by the Visitor to the University, His Excellency, Bassey Edet Otu, after due consideration.
3. Prior to the adjustment, UNICROSS charged some of the lowest fees among universities in Nigeria. Even with the current review, the University’s fees remain comparatively lower than those of several public universities, including neighbouring state government owned institutions.
4. Students who may experience difficulty meeting their financial obligations are encouraged to explore available support mechanisms, including the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which provides financial assistance to eligible and indigent students.
5. The Vice Chancellor, Francisca Bassey, remains committed to student welfare and institutional development. Her leadership is guided by professionalism, transparency, and a clear vision for the advancement of UNICROSS. Ongoing reforms are necessary to reposition the University for greater competitiveness and global relevance.
6. On behalf of the University Management’s, we assure all stakeholders that dialogue remains open and that the welfare of students continues to be a priority. We urge students to engage constructively through appropriate channels as we collectively work toward a stronger and more sustainable UNICROSS.
UNICROSS, For Transformation!
UNICROSS, For the World!
UNICROSS, For Progress!
Above All, UNICROSS for God!
