With just days to the May 29 handover date, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Cross River State, John Achort Okon, is insisting that his party will ensure that the promises made by the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the run-in to the general elections, are kept in the wake of the APC’s new status as the ruling party at the centre.

Okon who spoke in an exclusive interview with www.calitown.com insists that, “when the promises are not kept, we will inform the people, especially Cross Riverians that the APC has not kept to her promises. Ours will be an opposition at the centre that is very collaborative and I can assure you that we cannot be the antagonistic kind of opposition that makes noise and wants to embarrass and bring down the government”.

On whether a lot has gone wrong with the PDP in the state, the chairman was swift in pointing out that, “…things can go wrong in any party…in Cross River State for instance, it took the intervention of the state governor for us to survive the hurricane that the National Executive wanted to force on us here. My brothers, we went for primary elections and respected people in our party came with fake papers and result sheets…only two result sheets from Akamkpa and Obanliku were correct, the rest were not. I am giving you a typical example because it now looked like people were short-changed. People who went to the field to commit fraud were now crying like they were the victims, forgetting that their action would have destroyed the party in the state”.

For those elected in the state on the platform of the PDP, Okon says, “if the people have voted them in, they must perform. They must be close to their people and not wait for the election year before they go there looking for votes because it is going to be tough work for them to cling to old ways”.
Cross River governor-elect, Ben Ayade he continues, “came in the spirit of continuity, we wanted somebody that will not come and say the out-going government is his own enemy, going ahead to dismantle everything. We wanted somebody with capacity and intellect to be able to do better than Imoke and the party are expecting…I believe that Ayade is ready and will do very well”.
