It has been disclosed that when the necessary legislative processes in the Cross River State House of Assembly are completed, a law will come into existence with a death by hanging penalty upon conviction for kidnapping in Cross River State.

Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, CRSHA, John Gaul Lebo, made this disclosure while unveiling to journalists in Calabar, the Citizens Legislative Agenda Project, CLAP, a project of the 8th Assembly which seeks to make constituents the main focus of legislative activities.

Lebo insisted that while kidnapping may not be rampant in CRS, legislation must be in place to deter people from taking to this criminal act and again that in very recent times, a few kidnappings have occurred in the state and if no stringent laws are in place, security of lives may be threatened.

On the review of the Laws of Cross River State by the Legislature, the Speaker informed that “it has been twelve years since the review of this laws and let me tell you all that 120 laws have been passed but they are not in the volumes of the Laws of Cross River State, this I must say is unacceptable”.

CLAP which has been designed to encourage good governance and citizens participation in legislation through legislative education, constituency engagements and media access, was unbundled to the admiration of all present at the occasion.
