A family court in Cross River State, presided over by the Honourable Justice Blessing Egwu of Family Court II Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria, has sentenced one 48 year old man, Ita Okon, to life imprisonment for raping an 8-year old girl in Calabar.

Okon, in addition to the life sentence, by the court, was also told to pay a compensation of N1,000,000 (One million naira) to the 8-years old survivor.

James Ibor, of Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, shortly after the judgement, used the “opportunity to thank the Nigerian Police Force, Cross River State, the Ministry of Justice, Cross River State” for driving the process to conclusion.
