It has been revealed to www.calitown.com that the Cross River State Government plans to operate only one School of Nursing in Calabar while the School of Nursing facility in Itigidi, Abi LGA will cater only to midwifery training. For those pursuing a bachelor of science degree in nursing, training will be at the College of Medical Sciences, Cross River University of Technology, Ogoja Campus.

Sources in Gov. Liyel Imoke’s entourage who revealed this piece of information, say the governor made this disclosure on the premises of the School of Midwifery, Itigidi, over the weekend after inspecting ongoing renovation and construction works as well as the proposed site for the school’s administrative department.Imoke is quoted to have maintained that, the essence of establishing a school in one location, is to do away with the duplication of functions while collapsing multi campuses into Calabar and Itigidi respectively. While the schools are currently experiencing structural upgrades, the construction of new demonstration buildings, auditorium, library, administrative blocks, and hostels, are efforts also being put in place to ensure that the courses offered at the schools are accredited.

While conducting the governor round the school, Christiana Ugar, the principal, School of Midwifery, Itigidi, said students were temporarily accommodated at the hospital, while some of the wards have been converted to classrooms to enable them receive lectures. She explained that the students cannot be sent home while construction and renovation work is going on in the school, because some of them were preparing for their professional examinations slated for November this year.
