While most members of the Cross River State House of Assembly appear to have formed the habit of always insisting to constituents that they are not well funded by the Executive in Cross River State, the hustle by several members of the House to return for a second or more terms in the House, has drawn the ire of the spokesman of the Cross River State governor, Bassey Edet Otu.
Taking to his verified Facebook page, Linus Obogo, Chief Press Secretary to the CRS governor, wrote: “It beats me silly how those who said the House of Assembly has made them poorer and the governor isn’t releasing money to them, are now turning back to hanker for a second term. Height of Idiocy”.
“Obogo’s high powered statement clearly re-echoes a line of thought among people that those members deliberately sell this talk so they can escape the pressure and demands of the electorate; after all nobody takes part in an enterprise that is not beneficial”, a politician in the state who does not want his name in print told us.
“But you truly know it’s the language of all political office holders, legislators and executives – Chairmen, Governors and Presidents (sic). After the do or die fight in the election, upon taking oath of office they quickly commission their aides to sell to the people how there is no money, allocation is poor, debt burden inherited from previous administration, bla bla bla. So nothing is new. It’s the same playbook, sir”, Ben Odaji, wrote in response to the post.
While there has been no official response from the House, it does appear members are more occupied with securing passage to the next round of elections than being drawn into a contentious arguement with the governor’s spokesman.
