After weeks of what political observers say has been a period of suppressed anger, the Legislature in Ikom Local Government Area, showed the first signs of disagreement between her and council chairman, Mercy Nsor, after all 11 councillors in the LGA, shunned a two-day religious programme, organised by the chairman to usher in the 2025 administrative year in the council.
The two-day programme, conducted at the instance of the council chairman by one Ken Ewa, of a certain christian congregation known in the area as Bethel City International, became an opportunity for Nsor to address stakeholders in attendance, promising focused leadership and effective representation, additionally informing the people that she was bent on tackling, headlong, problems identified.
While all of this played out, a competent source in the area, who has elected to remain anonymous, informed www.calitown.com that, “all 11 councillors stayed away from this event after accusing the chairman of keeping all identified revenue points to herself and perceived cronies. If she wants to keep everything to herself, she should be ready to work all alone and walk into trouble.”
“What is the solemn assembly for? Can’t we all pray in our homes and God will answer to our prayers? The pastor she brought, did he minister for free, wasn’t he paid? I think that if she is bent on working without recourse to us, elected councillors of Ikom LGA, we may be in for a very bumpy ride. We have the needs of our constituents, who elected us, to attend to, if she does not make this task easy on us then they will be no cooperation from us”, one councillor told us.
The visible absence of all 11 councillors at the event, we were further informed, made the chairman uncomfortable, forcing some members of her Executive council to reach out to the aggrieved councillors who in turn did not shift grounds. We were afterwards informed that, “the whole situation is under control; this is politics, we will disagree and then agree. That the 11 councillors stayed away from the event is not something that cannot be handled, we are a political family and will resolve the underlying issues amicably”, we were informed.
