A contingent of dignitaries from Nigeria’s seat of government, Abuja, has emptied into Cross River State, as the remains of the country’s former Senate President, Joseph Wayas, finally arrived the state for a national burial, almost three years after he passed away in a London hospital.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, notably leading the Abuja contingent, arrived to the warm embrace of state governor, Bassey Edet Otu, aboard a chartered flight with some senators, aides and associates, just in time for the commencement of formal burial rites.
Senators Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, Eteng Williams and Asuquo Ekpenyong, representing Cross River North, Central and South respectively, were visibly sighted, on ground to receive and escort the remains of the late elder statesman, home.
Earlier, Williams, who spoke at a valedictory session of Nigeria’s senate in Abuja, informed that, “Wayas was the first Senate President in the country’s history to enjoy a second term in office as Senate President as well as operate as the country’s President for 16 days, when then President Shehu Shagari and his vice, Alex Ekwueme, travelled out of the country.”
The deceased remains will journey to Sankwala, Obanliku LGA, Cross River State, today Friday, November 29, 2024, where pre-burial formalities will continue before he will be buried this Saturday, November 30, 2024.
