Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, John Gaul Lebo, has openly declared his intention to midwife the birth of a “Democracy Club” to be unveiled next week, after he returns to the state from Kenya, where he has been attending the 46th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, CPC.

On his Facebook page, monitored by www.calitown.com, Lebo clearly states that, “ as a delegate to the 46th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, I have learnt a few lessons…quite a fascinating experience to see youth clubs and parliamentary unions even in smaller democratic countries, I wonder why we have not invested in this scheme, it is time to act now.

The Speaker also plans to present a proposal to the House in furtherance of this initiative which should in the long run create opportunities for youths in Cross River State gain access to scholarships, harvest opportunities in the many seminars and conferences available at the regional and international levels as well as gain employment. He again promises on his page to facilitate the attendance of one or two youths from the state to the next CPC.

Emmanuel Etim, reacting to the Speaker’s declared intentions, commended him for this great initiative and believes, “…it will go a long way in inculcating a democratic culture in our society”. He adds that, “we must encourage schools, both primary and secondary to have these democracy clubs and create regular activities for them”.
