Martin Orim, Chief of Staff, COS, to Cross River State governor, Ben Ayade, has reacted to an online news item on lindaikeji.blogspot.com, published this past Tuesday, July 21, 2015, purporting that he assaulted one Jeremiah Ashang and ordered his security aide to shoot the said Ashang at the Gramics Hotels, along Obudu Ranch road, CRS.

When he exclusively spoke with www.calitown.com, Orim, while maintaining his innocence, expressed shock that such a spurious allegation “coated in so much lies is being served the public by the said Ashang and his co-travellers” He further disclosed that “…long before Ashang and I were born, my late father, G.F.O Orim and his father HRM Cyprian Ashang, were very good friends. I even have a brother who is named after his father and to think that I will assault Jeremiah, throwing away the relationship our families have, will be a very unfortunate thing to do”.

Picking holes in Ashang’s story, Orim said, “… for instance, the man claims he was mercilessly beaten, hands and legs tied up, sprayed tear gas and bundled into a Hilux Truck. Thereafter I ordered aides to shoot and kill himself and his cousin. When he heard me bark out orders that he should be shot, imagine that this same man whose hands and legs had been tied, got up without loosening the ropes and ran for his life. You see the contradiction?”

However, the COS advised the man in question to “resist the temptation of being used to execute a smear campaign against me. He should understand that it will be the worst form of indiscretion on my part, if I engage in the things he insinuates about, knowing how sensitive and strategic my responsibilities as a public officer in this state are. It is my character and conduct, over time, that earned me the position of COS and how to effectively discharge my functions is what should preoccupy me. God will forgive and protect him”, he concluded.
